上記のページを参考にしました。
以下引用：
MySQL では、SQL-92 のすべての数値データ型をサポートしています。これらのデータ型は、正確な数値データ型（
NUMERIC、DECIMAL、INTEGER、SMALLINT）だけでなく、近似数値データ型（FLOAT、REAL、DOUBLE PRECISION）を含みます。キーワードINTはINTEGERのシノニムで、キーワードDECはDECIMALのシノニムです。
MySQL では、NUMERIC型とDECIMAL型は、SQL-92 標準で使用可能なデータ型と同じデータ型として実装されます。これらのデータ型は、金額データに関する値など、正確な精度で保存することが重要となる値に対して使用されます。これらのいずれかの型のカラムを宣言する際には、次のように、精度とスケールを指定することができます（通常、これらが指定されます）。
との事なので、より正確な値を扱いたければDECIMALなんかを使ってくれってことらしい。

One afternoon, I was in the backyard hanging the laundry when an old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home. But when I walked into the house, he followed me, sauntered down the hall and fell asleep in a corner. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back. This continued for several weeks. Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: "Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap. "
The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with ten children - he's trying to catch up on his sleep."
